Yoga & Pilates Enthusiasts

Dr. Duke shows how to prevent back pain that could otherwise result from the Downward Dog position.

Injured Doing Yoga or Pilates? You Don’t Have to Stop Practicing

Yoga and Pilates are two of the best ways to relieve tension, improve posture, and build core strength—all without the wear and tear of high-impact workouts. But even mindful movement can sometimes lead to injury. Whether it’s from pushing too hard, improper form, or ignoring early warning signs, injuries can sneak up on even the most experienced practitioners.

At the Duke Center for Chiropractic Sports & Spine C.A.R.E., we specialize in helping yoga and Pilates enthusiasts recover while continuing their practice. Dr. Duke knows how important it is to keep your body moving—especially when movement is part of your lifestyle. That’s why he creates personalized treatment plans designed to support healing while helping you safely stay active.

We’ll also help you find the right instructors and classes for your current needs, and show you how to communicate with your teacher about any injuries or modifications—so you can return to your mat or reformer with confidence and clarity.

COMMON YOGA & PILATES INJURIES WE TREAT

Some of the conditions we treat include:

  • Lower back: Forward bends can lead to bulging discs and other injuries.
  • Knee tears: Your knee can twist out of alignment while coming in or out of a pose.
  • Hamstring tears: It’s possible to push too deeply into a forward pose and pull the hamstring at the upper part near the buttocks.
  • Wrist strains: Spending a lot of time in the downward dog position can do a number on your wrists and elbows, particularly if you have carpal tunnel syndrome or perform a lot of computer work.
  • Shoulder blade and rib pain: Shifting from upward to downward dog requires near perfect balance and places tremendous stress on your shoulder area. Being off balance challenges your shoulder girdle and strains the rotator cuff and rib cage.
  • Neck injuries: Without proper support, the wheel, plow, headstand and shoulder stand can place an enormous amount of strain on the neck.
