Dr. Duke shows how to prevent back pain that could otherwise result from the Downward Dog position.

Lots of people do yoga because it helps them alleviate neck strain, loosen their lower back, and make their limbs feel longer. It’s a low-impact form of exercise. Yet, despite all this, people occasionally do injure themselves while doing yoga. The number one cause of yoga injuries is ego, believe it or not — looking around the room, comparing your abilities to others, and overdoing it!

If this happens to you, Duke Chiropractic knows just what to do — and how to help you keep it from happening again. We also can help you find the right classes and experienced teachers, and help you communicate with your instructors about your injuries.

COMMON YOGA INJURIES WE TREAT

Some of the conditions we treat include:

  • Lower back: Forward bends can lead to bulging discs and other injuries.
  • Knee tears: Your knee can twist out of alignment while coming in or out of a pose.
  • Hamstring tears: It’s possible to push too deeply into a forward pose and pull the hamstring at the upper part near the buttocks.
  • Wrist strains: Spending a lot of time in the downward dog position can do a number on your wrists and elbows, particularly if you have carpal tunnel syndrome or perform a lot of computer work.
  • Shoulder blade and rib pain: Shifting from upward to downward dog requires near perfect balance and places tremendous stress on your shoulder area. Being off balance challenges your shoulder girdle and strains the rotator cuff and rib cage.
  • Neck injuries: Without proper support, the wheel, plow, headstand and shoulder stand can place an enormous amount of strain on the neck.
