Dr. Duke explains how spinal decompression can help patients avoid spinal surgery.

HOW DUKE CENTER TREATS BACK PAIN

Treatment varies by case, but, in general, depending on type, pain, duration, and cause, patients can expect:

  1. Evaluation. Full orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic tests. Measuring strength, sensation and reflexes are only the beginning. We specifically challenge your body to determine root cause of the problem.
  2. Treatment plan. Duke Chiropractic will customize a treatment plan, generally lasting 6-8 weeks, that takes into account your risk factors such as age, physical fitness, your job (sitting for long periods, for example), and family history.

Treatment may include but not be limited to:

  • Chronic manipulation: A gentle realignment of joints of the spinal column, which, when misaligned, can cause nerve and muscle disorders.
  • Exercise: Our doctors design exercises that are specific to your body — we do not use templates or take a cookie-cutter approach to physical therapy. We will teach you how to re-stack your posture and realign your spine.
  • Active Release Technique (ART)
  • Graston Technique
  • Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
  • EPAT

WHEN TO SEEK TREATMENT

Nearly 9 out of 10 adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. Some choose to simply “live with it,” although nobody should have to do that. Here are just a few common signs you should contact Duke

  • Pain. Any back pain is abnormal and should be addressed. We ask patients to report their pain level on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is none and 10 is excruciating. If your pain is above 1, you should contact us.
  • Distorted posture — if your body tilts to the side, for example.
  • Back discomfort when you cough sneeze or laugh.
  • Pain that travels either across your lower back or down your thigh, shin or foot.
  • Upper body strength is noticeably diminished.
  • Difficulty walking, or frequent tripping over feet.
  • Difficulty transitioning from sitting to standing, or rolling over in bed.
